It’s HOT! Eat foods that help you COOL OFF

The City is alive and bright! The streets and greenmarkets are buzzing with the energy and abundance of the season. But, the oppressive heat and humidity in NYC is starting to take its toll, so here are a few tips to keep you cool, energized and protected under the hot sun:

  • Opt for lighter veggies such as microgreens, spinach, summer squash, cucumber, tomatoes, fresh mint, sprouts and watermelon. Save hardy veggies like carrots, winter squash, sweet potatoes for the cooler months.
  • Help prevent sunburn with tomatoes, peppers, berries, green tea, fatty fish, olives and olive oil, brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, aloe juice and leafy greens.
  • Replace the electrolytes you lose when sweating with mineral-rich foods such as sea vegetables, coconut water and sparkling mineral water with lemon.
  • Use quick cooking methods like sautéing, stir-frying, blanching or steaming. Stews and slow-roasted foods may make you feel overheated and sluggish.

Most of all, summer is a time to enjoy life, so filter a spirit of fun and adventure into your food. Reach for a variety of brightly-colored fruits and vegetables and try something new!
